Board Support Package (BSP) enables Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) on e600 PowerPC processors, offering a viable growth path for VersaModular Eurocard bus (VMEbus) customers with applications on previous-generation VME boards

SAN JOSÉ, Calif., September 8, 2009—LynuxWorks™, Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, and Emerson Network Power, the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™, today announced that LynxOS 5.0 now supports Emerson’s MVME7100 single-board computer (SBC). The complete BSP supports PowerPC’s 8641D, an e600-family processor that has been specifically architected for multi-core and SMP. This powerful hardware and software combination offers a strategic growth path for VMEbus customers with applications on previous-generation VME boards, further extending the product life cycle.

lynxos-50pxVMEbus is used around the world in industrial, commercial, and military/aerospace applications. VMEbus architectures are being used today in robots, air traffic control systems, weapons control systems, data acquisition and video imaging products. The advantage of the VMEbus architecture is that it can withstand shock, vibration and extended temperatures better than the traditional buses found in general desktop computers.

The Emerson MVME7100 is an SBC that helps original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of industrial, medical and defense/aerospace VMEbus platforms add performance and features while still protecting their fundamental investment in VMEbus and related technologies. Customers can keep their VMEbus infrastructure (chassis, backplanes and other VMEbus and add-in boards) while improving performance and extending the product’s life cycle. That extended life cycle helps reduce churns in development and support efforts as a result of frequent product changes.

“Our customers will be excited to learn that LynxOS now supports our MVME7100,” said Paul Virgo, director of marketing for the Embedded Computing business of Emerson Network Power. “As users want to add functionality, increase processing power or extend the life of their current VME implementation, they now have a compelling migration path forward with the MVME7100.”

“One of the main advantages of using LynxOS with the MVME7100 is that it allows developers to use less hardware to achieve the same system performance,” said Sonia Leal, senior product manager at LynuxWorks. “Not only does this combination reduce space, power and weight requirements, but it lowers the overall cost per system as well.”

Additional built-in features for LynxOS 5.0 include support for:

  • New GNU toolchain
  • ELF file format
  • Ada programming language
  • New POSIX—POSIX 1003.1-2003 PSE 53/54
  • Network File System (NFS) v2/v4
