Latest support provides developers with an FAA-certifiable development platform
SAN JOSÉ, Calif., April 14, 2008—LynuxWorks™ Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, today announced the availability of its LynxOS®-178 real-time embedded operating system for the Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) (Nasdaq:AMCC) PowerPC 460EX and 460GT high-performance embedded processors. Offering low power dissipation and a small form factor, the AMCC PowerPC 460EX and 460GT solutions with LynuxWorks’ support are ideal for safety-critical, high-density and power-conscious applications, such as those used in the avionics market.
The LynxOS-178 RTOS is the first and only hard real-time RTCA/DO-178B/C level A operating system to offer the interoperability benefits of POSIX® with support for the ARINC 653 APplication EXecutive (APEX), and is the only RTOS to be awarded a Reusable Software Component (RSC) by the FAA. At the core of the LynxOS-178 real-time operating system is LynxOS, a mature UNIX®-style operating system (born 1988) that was designed from the start for hard real-time determinism. LynxOS-178 has been deployed in millions of safety-critical devices worldwide, including multiple military and aerospace systems certified to DO-178B/C, up to level A.
Moreover, LynuxWorks’ DO-178B/C certifiable TCP/IP protocol stack, the Lynx Certifiable Stack (LCS), offers unmatched performance and flexibility to designers of safety-critical systems and complements the 460 series’ extensive connectivity options. The Lynx Certifiable Stack, fully integrated with LynxOS-178 RTOS, has extended the capabilities of the AMCC solution and has allowed AMCC to provide an offering that meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for RTCA/DO-178B/C, Level A certification.
“We have married complementary technologies by providing a high-performance network stack that meets safety-critical guidelines with our proven LynxOS-178 operating system on top of the feature-rich AMCC PowerPC platforms to create a solution that meets the emerging needs by our customers for increased performance, throughput and determinism,” said Joe Wlad, director of product management at LynuxWorks.
“We are pleased that LynuxWorks is now providing LynxOS-178 RTOS support for the PowerPC 460EX and 460GT processors”, said Charlie Ashton, director of enablement at AMCC. “Several of our customers have told us that they plan to use LynxOS-178 because of the safety-critical features that it provides. We are confident that the availability of this solution will allow us to expand our customer base for these new processors.”
With speeds of up to 1.0GHz, support for floating-point operations, USB 2.0, PCI Express, SATA, Gigabit Ethernet, security, NAND Flash interfaces and low power dissipation, the PowerPC 460 processor family is leading the way in innovation for embedded systems. Based on the PowerPC architecture, a RISC based architecture developed by pioneers Apple, IBM and Motorola in 1991, the PowerPC 460EX and 460GT AMCC processor solutions have become widely popular in embedded and high-performance computing.
