Embedded leader’s BlueCat Linux and LynxOS RTOS provide open, reliable software for camera-based sorting machine
SAN JOSÉ, Calif., June 16, 2008—LynuxWorks™, Inc., a world leader in embedded software, today announced that Accu-Sort® Systems, Inc., a world leader in industrial high-speed camera-based identification solutions, is deploying a combination of LynuxWorks’ BlueCat® embedded Linux® and LynxOS®, its embedded real-time operating system (RTOS), as the software platform for Accu-Sort’s new AccuVision® 6010 Long-Range Camera System (AV-6010).
LynuxWorks’ ability to offer both open-source and RTOS platforms, tied together by a single IDE and set of development tools, fit Accu-Sort’s unique requirements for the AV-6010. Accu-Sort’s AV-6010 is the latest addition to its AccuVision product line, and its camera system will serve as the new technology platform for future Accu-Sort products. A fully integrated camera-based scanning solution for postal routing, warehouse and other distribution environments, the AV-6010 offers best-in-class performance for one- and two-dimensional bar code reading, as well as support for Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and video coding applications.
For industrial equipment makers such as Accu-Sort, LynuxWorks’ flagship product, LynxOS, provides an advanced foundation for sophisticated real-time systems, and includes open APIs and Linux ABI compatibility, along with full conformance to POSIX® and advanced networking features. BlueCat Linux, based on the 2.6 kernel, offers all the open-source benefits of Linux. Any application written for BlueCat Linux can be migrated to LynxOS if the day comes when the Linux application requires stricter, hard real-time performance, as Linux application code can run on LynxOS without modifications. Both BlueCat and LynxOS developers use the Eclipse-based Luminosity IDE and development tools, which offer open-standards tools support for LynuxWorks’ family of operating systems.
“Applications like the AV-6010 require ultimate reliability both from the hardware and the software. At LynuxWorks, we couple always-on reliability with open standards in our products, to our customers a unique and compelling software solution,” said Robert Day, VP Marketing, LynuxWorks. “By selecting our BlueCat embedded Linux and LynxOS, Accu-Sort has ensured maximum reusability of their application software to be able to migrate across either operating system based on the performance needs for their devices.”
Ideal for high-speed parcel sorting, Accu-Sort’s AV-6010 is targeted for environments where previous high-end camera-based solutions may have been more complex than was required. The AV-6010 offers ultimate reliability, with mean time between failures at more than 75,000 hours.
LynuxWorks’ reputation for open and reliable systems, as well as its ability to offer complementary open-source and RTOS solutions made the choice an easy one for Accu-Sort. “The design for the AV-6010 required both Linux and an RTOS component,” said Bruce Love, Software Engineering Manager, Accu-Sort. “Only LynuxWorks offered both environments—and a single toolset to use, which was attractive since our developers would not need to overcome a lengthy learning curve.”
