Virtualization Security: LynuxWorks Offers New Security Protection for Connected Embedded Devices

2013-04-23T10:22:31+00:00

New features added to the LynxSecure separation kernel help protect embedded systems from advanced cyber threats SAN JOSÉ, CA, Design West 2013 and Black Hat Embedded Security Summit—April 23, 2013—LynuxWorks™, Inc, a world leader in secure virtualization and real-time operating systems (RTOS), today announced that they are adding new security features to the LynxSecure embedded hypervisor to offer real-time detection, alert and protection against new cyber threats—including zero-day rootkits and bootkits. As more embedded devices are connected to the outside world, as well as being connected to each other (machine-to-machine), the more they are vulnerable to malicious cyber threats seeking to threaten critical infrastructure, financial infrastructure and corporate domains. LynxSecure is based on separation kernel technology and was designed from the ground up with security as a key design goal. Adding virtualization to the separation kernel allows for multiple different guest operating systems (OS), both real-time and general purpose, to run in secure domains on a single embedded system. LynxSecure 5.2 is the latest version of this established product and adds a new feature that offers real-time detection of stealthy advanced persistent [...]

Now Any Embedded System Can Be Hi-Reliability

2012-09-05T10:30:54+00:00

The distinction between ‘hi-reliability’ and ‘standard’ embedded software design is being blurred as the commercial and human consequences of embedded system failure escalate. Whether in avionics, medical, automotive, or SCADA systems, the slightest flaw can ripple down to a system failure and potential injury or loss of life. Technology integrated into these systems must be highly scrutinised to ensure system reliability is preserved. While robustness is a primary concern, these systems are constantly evolving to increase functionality, reduce footprint, and save operational cost. In order to meet these demands systems become more software intensive and more complex, making robustness difficult to achieve. At the same time, the increasingly connected world of commercial embedded systems leaves them vulnerable to threats from the outside, leading to increased demand to design with security in mind. High reliability systems like power and lighting are as likely to be brought down by malware as they are by software failures. For example security services warned the London 2012 Olympic authorities about a potential cyber-attack on their power supply just days before the Games opening ceremony, resulting in urgent [...]

The Rise of the Type Zero Hypervisor

2012-07-18T12:28:15+00:00

Virtualization offers great benefits for embedded designs, such as consolidating multiple systems into a single platform or separating applications of different security levels. However, the use of virtualization in high-security and high-reliability applications like mil/aero has been hindered by the limitations of mainstream Type 1 and Type 2 hypervisors. These hypervisors are often too large or complex due to their underlying host or supporting operating system (OS), or too limited in configurability for embedded system designs. A new “Type Zero” hypervisor from LynuxWorks, named LynxSecure*, addresses these issues with a unique lightweight architecture designed specifically for embedded systems. This new architecture features a minimized hypervisor that omits the need for a supporting OS and provides a toolset to give embedded architects granular control over system resources. The minimal design focuses on reducing the system attack surface and achieving high-reliability for mission-critical environments. What’s more, this new architecture leverages the features of 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processors with Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT), allowing multiple OSs as well as bare-metal applications to securely run in virtualized environments and achieve near-native CPU and I/O [...]
