EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE 2009 SAN JOSÉ, Calif., March 31, 2009—Further cementing its leadership in secure military systems, LynuxWorks™, Inc., a world leader in embedded software, today announced that its LynxSecure separation kernel will be incorporated in the U.S. Navy’s Common Display System (CDS) display. Part of the Navy’s Open Architecture Computing Environment initiative, the $83 million CDS display console project will be rolled out in support of DDG1000 and Aegis Modernization.

The LynxSecure separation kernel and hypervisor provides an environment in which multiple guest operating systems running at different security levels (e.g. Secret – Top Secret – Unclassified) will execute at the same time without compromising security, reliability or data integrity. This is critical because military systems such the CDS display console system require adherence to rigid high-assurance security requirements. Program plans include evaluation of LynxSecure to EAL-7 per the Common Criteria and the Separation Kernel Protection Profile.

CDS is a survivable and configurable high-assurance workstation providing an operator access to multiple shipboard applications simultaneously. This family of console displays is to be integrated into the ships that comprise the DDG 1000 Zumwalt class of next-generation destroyers as well as the modernization of the Aegis class of guided missile destroyers.

LynxSecure’s primary security function is to guarantee secure partitioning of system resources and to securely enforce the information-flow policy between partitions. The kernel’s configuration defines the partitions and policies, which will provide a strong foundation for multilevel secure systems. LynxSecure’s superior performance is made possible through cutting-edge virtualization technology, which will allow an operating system and its applications to run efficiently within the hypervisor environment, effectively allowing multiple, different operating systems to share a single hardware platform.

LynxSecure will be the secure separation kernel designed to support both Common Criteria EAL-7+ security certification, and the FAA’s highest certification, DO-178B/C level A, for safety-critical applications. LynxSecure will be highly scalable, supporting 64-bit addressing for high-end scalability. And, like all LynuxWorks’ products, LynxSecure has the highest support for open standards, with utilizing Linux® as a guest OS and having POSIX® as the native API for the high-assurance application runtime environment.
